The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the digital workday continues to advance. Google is expanding its Workspace with new features based on the AI model Gemini. These innovations promise to optimize user workflows, repurpose existing content, and improve collaboration. A particular highlight is the ability to automatically convert documents into audio formats, essentially creating a podcast at the push of a button.
The new feature in Google Workspace will allow users to convert text documents into audio files. Via the "Insert" menu and the "Audio" option, Gemini will read the text aloud. Users can choose whether the entire document should be read or a summary of the most important points should be created in a podcast style. This feature is currently in the testing phase and is initially being tried out by selected users.
In addition to audio generation, Gemini also offers support for automating workflows. Using so-called "Workspace Flows," processes within Google Tools can be automated. One example is the processing of customer inquiries received via Google Forms. Gemini can summarize these inquiries, prioritize them, and notify specific employees via Google Chat. Additionally, AI chatbots can be integrated, which generate solution suggestions based on product information and support guidelines.
Gemini will also improve text quality in Google Docs by presenting arguments more clearly and standardizing formatting. Furthermore, the ability to create videos in Google Vids using the Veo-2 model will be introduced. Google Meet and Google Chat also benefit from the AI functions. In Meet, users can get summaries of missed meetings. In Chat, Gemini can summarize the key points of group discussions, identify open questions, and suggest next steps.
The new Gemini features will be gradually released to Google Workspace users. Some features, such as automatic meeting summaries in Google Meet, are expected to be available to all users by the end of the second quarter of 2025. Other features, such as podcast creation from documents, are still in the testing phase. Google has not yet announced specific dates for the general availability of all features.
