A new venture called the Stargate Project plans to invest $500 billion over the next four years in building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States. Of this, $100 billion is to be deployed immediately. This ambitious undertaking aims to secure American leadership in the field of artificial intelligence, create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the US, and generate significant economic benefits for the entire world.
The Stargate Project is intended not only to support the reindustrialization of the United States but also to provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of America and its allies. Stargate's initial equity investors include SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. SoftBank and OpenAI will assume leadership roles within the project: SoftBank will bear the financial responsibility, while OpenAI will take on the operational responsibility. Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, will chair the project.
Key technology partners in the project include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI. Infrastructure expansion has already begun in Texas, and potential locations across the country for additional campuses are currently being evaluated, while final agreements are being finalized.
As part of Stargate, Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will work closely together to build and operate this computing system. This collaboration builds upon a long-standing cooperation between OpenAI and NVIDIA since 2016, as well as a more recent partnership between OpenAI and Oracle.
The project also expands OpenAI's existing partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI will continue to expand its use of Azure as the company continues its collaboration with Microsoft and leverages the additional computing capacity to train leading models and deliver innovative products and services.
The initiators of the Stargate Project emphasize their commitment to developing AI, especially Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), for the benefit of all humankind. They see this new step as crucial on the path to that goal and expect it to enable creative people to discover how AI can be used to benefit humanity.
