Samsung Electronics unveiled its new, self-developed AI model, Gauss2, at the Samsung Developer Conference Korea 2024 (SDC24 Korea). The second generation of the multimodal AI model promises improved performance, efficiency, and expanded application possibilities compared to its predecessor.
Gauss2 is available in three variants: Compact, Balanced, and Supreme. These are tailored to different computational requirements:
Compact: This variant is optimized for environments with limited computing resources, enabling effective performance even on the device itself.
Balanced: This version offers a balanced ratio between performance, speed, and efficiency and is suitable for a variety of tasks.
Supreme: The Supreme model utilizes Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) technology to minimize computational costs while maximizing efficiency and performance.
Depending on the model, Gauss2 supports between nine and fourteen languages, as well as a number of programming languages. Samsung's own training methods and tokenizers aim to deliver top efficiency in all supported languages. The new models promise 1.5 to 3 times faster response generation than leading open-source alternatives, enabling swift AI interaction and minimizing wait times.
Gauss2 is already being used internally by Samsung developers for various productivity tasks. The AI-powered coding assistant "code.i," enhanced by Gauss2, is being used extensively within the DX (Device eXperience) division and by international research teams. Up to 60% of developers now use it regularly.
Another example is the "Gauss Portal," another AI service based on Gauss. It increases productivity through features like document summarization and translation. Since its introduction, this AI service has been expanded internationally and supports various office tasks. Since August, call center operations have also benefited from the AI-powered categorization and summarization of customer conversations.
In the future, Samsung plans to further increase internal productivity by improving services like code.i and expanding the functions of the Gauss Portal, particularly in the area of natural language question-and-answer capabilities. Future functionalities will also include multimodal operations such as chart analysis and image generation.
With the "AI for All" strategy, Samsung is pursuing the vision of integrating AI-based services into all its product lines. By combining AI with knowledge graph technology, Samsung expects even stronger personalization of the user experience.
In addition to Gauss2, other software developments were presented at the conference, including improvements to the SmartThings platform. Participants were able to attend 29 technical sessions covering topics such as the future of healthcare, improvements to the SmartThings experience through generative AI, insights into the AI coding assistant code.i, innovations in lifestyle content for televisions, and AI solutions for Samsung home appliances.
The SDC24 Korea underscored Samsung's vision to integrate AI into its entire ecosystem, thereby elevating the user experience to a new level.
