New Features for Android and Pixel: Google Integrates Spotify into Gemini and Expands Security Features
Google has announced a comprehensive update for Android and its Pixel devices, bringing a range of new features. The focus is on the integration of the music streaming service Spotify into the AI chatbot Gemini and improvements to security features. The update affects both the latest Android version 15 and older versions and will be rolled out gradually to compatible devices.
Gemini Controls Spotify and Receives Expanded Functionality
One of the key innovations is the Spotify integration into Gemini. Users can now play music via Spotify using voice commands, similar to how it was already possible with Google Assistant. This feature was implemented retrospectively to establish feature parity between Gemini and Google Assistant.
In addition, Gemini gains access to the "Utilities extension," which allows the chatbot to perform further actions, such as making calls, sending emails, and changing phone settings. The Lookout app also benefits from the update. Gemini now provides more detailed image descriptions that are read aloud to users in a natural-sounding voice. This feature is currently only available in English.
Optimized Document Scans and New Sticker Combinations
Besides the Gemini innovations, the update also offers improvements for handling documents. Scanned files stored in Google Drive are optimized, and images and videos can be shared via Quick Share (formerly Nearby Share) using a QR code. For creative users, there are new sticker combinations in the Emoji Kitchen of the Gboard app. Google particularly highlights the new pizza emoji but also offers numerous other emoji mashups.
Android 15 QPR1: Improved Anti-Theft Protection and New Features for Pixel Devices
For Pixel smartphones, watches, and tablets, the update to Android 15 QPR1 brings additional features. Anti-theft protection has been improved: In a new location, identity verification now requires authentication via face or fingerprint before changes to sensitive settings can be made.
Google's free VPN service is now also available on the Pixel Tablet and protects sensitive data on public Wi-Fi networks. The Pixel Tablet also offers faster access to important controls by swiping right on the lock screen. Widgets for smart home devices, timers, music, and more are directly accessible. The Now Playing music recognition now also displays the cover art, and the Recorder app automatically reduces background noise for better clarity of recordings.
Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications and Fall Detection for Pixel Watch
The Pixel Watch (and eventually other wearables) receives the Irregular Rhythm Notification feature (Note: This was originally translated as "Pulse Loss Detection" but has been updated to reflect Google's official terminology). This feature detects when a person's heart beats irregularly and may be a sign of atrial fibrillation (AFib), and can notify the user to talk to a doctor. Additionally, fall detection for all Pixel Watch models and car crash detection for Pixel smartphones, as well as the Pixel Watch 2 and 3, are now available in Germany (availability varies by region).
