Artificial intelligence (AI) has influenced many areas of our lives in recent years, and language learning is no exception. This article reports on a self-experiment using ChatGPT's advanced language mode as a virtual language tutor in preparation for a trip to Tokyo. The goal was to explore the possibilities and limitations of generative AI in language learning and as a travel companion.
ChatGPT's advanced language mode allows users to speak with the AI and thus train their language skills. For this self-experiment, ChatGPT was used over several weeks to practice basic Japanese phrases for travel, from navigating public transport to ordering in restaurants. The learning process consisted of conversation sessions with the AI, role-playing, and vocabulary practice.
Initially, learning with ChatGPT was a bit bumpy. The first two weeks brought only minimal progress. However, in the course of the third week, some important phrases solidified, noticeably reducing nervousness about the upcoming trip. ChatGPT is not specifically designed for language learning, but rather a versatile tool. The default settings can seem somewhat general at the beginning, but the AI learns through interactions with the user and adapts to individual needs. In this specific case, ChatGPT quickly recognized the focus on the upcoming trip to Japan and the desire for conversational practice.
ChatGPT's "memory function," which passively updates throughout conversations, influences how the AI communicates with the user. This information can be adjusted or deleted in the account settings. Additionally, users can define their learning goals through "custom instructions," thus adapting the AI to their learning style.
One annoying aspect was the frequent and unspecific warning messages during language interactions. For example, the repeated request to repeat a sentence triggered a warning. This interrupted the flow of conversation. Also, ChatGPT's positive, almost overly optimistic feedback, even with obvious mistakes, proved somewhat irritating. More detailed and constructive criticism was only provided after explicit prompting.
Compared to other language learning apps like Duolingo, ChatGPT offers more flexibility and a wider range of learning opportunities. Duolingo, on the other hand, scores with playful and structured exercises that promote motivation.
In Tokyo, ChatGPT proved particularly useful for quickly reviewing phrases before using them in real-life situations. In restaurants, at tourist attractions, or on public transport, asynchronous translation with ChatGPT was more practical than the live translation mode.
Despite intensive practice with ChatGPT, there were some slips of the tongue and misunderstandings in practice. The phrases practiced beforehand were not always readily available. Nevertheless, the learned basics enabled smoother navigation through Tokyo and contributed to the travel experience.
With the further development of generative AI tools, these will also become increasingly powerful in the field of language learning. They can support not only speaking but also reading comprehension by providing translations, explanations, and vocabulary lists for complex texts, for example. However, a potential risk is that learners rely too heavily on AI tools and neglect the human aspect of language learning. The nuances of spoken language, emotions, thoughts, and cultural contexts could be lost.
While AI tools can be more patient than human teachers, direct exchange and the experience gained in interacting with native speakers are essential for a comprehensive understanding of language.
