Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and the virtual reality platform Quest, has announced its increased engagement with humanoid robots. The focus is initially on the development of software and sensors for these robots. Meta aims to create a kind of base system for the robotics industry that other companies can use. In the long term, AI-supported robots could be used as household helpers. In contrast to other tech giants, Meta is not planning to produce the robots themselves for the time being.
Apple is also showing interest in robotics, although the company is pursuing a more cautious approach. According to reports, Apple is still in an early development phase and is concentrating on feasibility studies. Mass production of robots is not expected for several years at the earliest. Nevertheless, Apple is actively seeking specialists in the field of robotics, which underscores the company's long-term interest in this technology.
The US robotics company Apptronik recently received substantial funding to advance the development of its humanoid robot Apollo. Apollo is a promising project that aims to demonstrate the possibilities of humanoid robots in various fields. The design of Apollo is reminiscent of the robots from Boston Dynamics, a leading company in the development of robots for industrial use.
Chinese companies like UBtech are pursuing a different approach and focusing on particularly human-like designs. The humanoid robot Una, designed for the service sector, has an appearance modeled after a woman. Una is intended to take on tasks at reception and conduct interactive conversations. This example shows how humanoid robots could interact directly with people in the future.
The development of humanoid robots is a complex and challenging undertaking. There are still many technical hurdles to overcome before these robots will be widespread in everyday life. Nevertheless, the growing interest of tech giants like Meta, Apple, and Google is a clear sign that humanoid robots have the potential to significantly influence the future of technology.
The development of humanoid robots presents both challenges and opportunities. In addition to the technical difficulties, ethical and societal questions must also be considered. How will the use of robots affect the labor market? What safety precautions are necessary to prevent misuse? These questions must be carefully examined to ensure that the development of humanoid robots is used for the benefit of society.
