Former Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann is the new General Secretary of the FDP (Free Democratic Party). The party confirmed the personnel decision on Sunday after the "Bild" newspaper first reported on it. Buschmann succeeds Bijan Djir-Sarai, who resigned in the wake of the controversy surrounding an internal strategy paper. The 47-year-old Buschmann is considered a close confidant of party leader Christian Lindner and is now tasked with orchestrating the Liberals' election campaign.
Buschmann's appointment comes at a turbulent time for the FDP. The resignation of Djir-Sarai and Federal Managing Director Carsten Reymann was the result of the publication of the so-called "D-Day" paper. This internal document outlined a detailed scenario for a possible FDP exit from the coalition government and caused considerable criticism, both within the party and from its former coalition partners. The wording of the paper, which used military terms like "D-Day" and "open battle," was perceived as inappropriate and insensitive. The publication of the document increased pressure on party leader Lindner, who denied any knowledge of the paper.
With the appointment of Buschmann, the FDP is relying on an experienced politician who knows the party structures well. Buschmann already served as Federal Managing Director of the FDP from 2014 to 2017 and previously as General Secretary of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia. His experience in party work and his close connection to Lindner make him a central figure in the upcoming election campaign. Buschmann himself commented on his new role in the "Bild" newspaper and emphasized the need for a strong liberal voice that advocates for economic growth and individual freedom. He sees the FDP as a counterpole to government overreach and bureaucracy and wants to convey this message in the election campaign.
The FDP faces major challenges before the federal election on February 23rd. Current polls put the party at 3 to 4 percent, far from the 11.5 percent it achieved in the 2021 federal election. Re-entering the Bundestag is therefore anything but certain. The turbulence surrounding the "D-Day" paper and the coalition break have damaged the party's image and could negatively impact the election results. Buschmann is now faced with the task of winning back voters and presenting the FDP once again as a strong liberal force. Whether he succeeds will become clear in the coming months.
