The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in urban planning is increasingly being discussed. In the Forest of Dean District, Gloucestershire, the council is considering using AI to help plan 5,400 new housing units by 2041. The government requires the district to create 597 new homes annually, a significant increase from the previously required 330 housing units per year. Faced with this pressure, the council is looking for innovative solutions to achieve these ambitious goals.
Council Chairman Adrian Birch emphasized that this is initially a research project to test the reliability of the technology. The goal is to accelerate decision-making processes. Birch explained in a council meeting: "If we can trust AI to deliver the correct results, we will examine whether this is a viable option." The council has commissioned an AI company to evaluate the public responses to the consultation on the local plan last summer. The AI's results will then be compared with the council's own analyses. Birch assured that the use of AI would be reviewed in case of doubt.
Even before the government's new requirements, the district had planned for the construction of 6,600 homes as part of its plan for the period from 2021 to 2041. Due to the new, mandatory requirements from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the total number of homes to be built by 2041 increases to 12,000. Locations have already been determined for a large portion of the originally planned 6,600 homes, mainly in Lydney, Beachley, and Newent. The search for suitable locations for the additional 5,400 homes is now leading to the revival of old ideas. These include the creation of a garden city between the A40 and A48 near Churcham and a new settlement at junction 2 of the M50 near Redmarley.
The use of AI in urban planning is a promising approach, but it also presents challenges. The accuracy and reliability of AI algorithms are crucial for decision-making. It is important to ensure that AI systems are trained with comprehensive and relevant data to guarantee unbiased results.
