AI Assistants at Work: An Analysis of Real-World Usage

Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace: An Analysis of the Use of AI Assistants

Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a topic of the future, but is increasingly finding its way into our everyday lives – including in the professional context. A current study by Anthropic, the company behind the AI assistant Claude, provides insights into the actual use of AI in the workplace. Based on the analysis of over four million anonymized conversations between users and Claude, the study offers valuable insights into how AI is already being used in various industries.

AI as Support, Not Replacement

Contrary to widespread fears, the study shows that AI is primarily used as a supporting tool and less as a complete replacement for human labor. In 57 percent of the analyzed cases, users utilized Claude for tasks such as brainstorming, idea development, and quality control. Here, AI serves as a digital assistant that simplifies daily work and increases efficiency.

Nevertheless, the automation of tasks also plays a role. In 43 percent of the cases, Claude took over tasks with minimal human involvement. However, Anthropic emphasizes that this does not necessarily lead to job losses. Rather, AI is used selectively for specific tasks that are easy to automate, allowing employees to focus on more complex activities.

Industries in Focus: Software Development and Creative Professions

The study also shows that AI usage varies considerably depending on the industry. In the field of software development and programming, usage is most widespread. Here, 37.2 percent of the analyzed conversations were related to tasks such as debugging and software modification. Creative professions and jobs in the media and marketing sector follow with 10.3 percent. Here, AI supports text creation and idea generation.

Significantly less AI usage is seen in industries such as healthcare, the transport sector, and agriculture. Here, the proportion of analyzed AI requests was only 0.1 percent.

Degree of Automation Varies by Profession

The degree of automation through AI also varies significantly between different professions. Only four percent of the professions examined showed AI usage of 75 percent or more. In 36 percent of the professions, AI was used for at least 25 percent of the tasks.

Outlook: AI as an Integral Part of the Working World

The Anthropic study demonstrates that AI has already arrived in many areas of the working world. The feared massive job losses do not seem to be occurring initially, as only a few professions are being fully automated. Instead, AI serves as a valuable tool that supports employees in their daily tasks and increases efficiency. It remains to be seen how the use of AI will develop in the future and what long-term impact this will have on the labor market.
