AI-Powered Wi-Fi: Singtel and Qualcomm Test Intelligent Gateway

Singtel and Qualcomm have completed a successful proof of concept (POC) for an AI-powered Wi-Fi gateway. This industry-first POC tested various devices and applications with Qualcomm's Smart Traffic Classifier, a component of the Networking AI Suite integrated into the Dragonwing Wi-Fi 7 platform.

The results showed a reduction in average latency of up to 50% for applications like online gaming, video streaming, and voice or video calls in high-network-traffic environments, significantly improving user experience.

Following this milestone, Singtel has announced initiatives to commercialize the AI-driven functionality in its markets, starting with Singapore. The company will also leverage Qualcomm's NPro 7 and N7 platforms to achieve further AI advancements aimed at further enhancing customer satisfaction.

Optimized Bandwidth Distribution and Energy Efficiency

Jorge Fernandes, Group CTO at Singtel, explained: “In today’s hyper-connected world where households rely heavily on uninterrupted high-speed connectivity for work, entertainment and running smart home devices, effective traffic management is essential.”

“Through this collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, we are setting new standards in home networking by harnessing the power of AI to deliver seamless bandwidth allocation and power optimization, which will enhance our customers’ connectivity experience.”

The AI-enabled home Wi-Fi gateway is intended to support Singtel’s ongoing efforts to meet rising consumer demands amidst the proliferation of data-intensive activities, cloud applications, and connected devices in smart homes.

The collaboration aligns with the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Singtel and Qualcomm, which aims to foster technological solutions to enhance the daily lives of users in Asia and beyond. Qualcomm’s expertise in on-device AI provides a strategic advantage in realizing this vision.

Transforming Connectivity

ST Liew, VP & President, QC Taiwan, SEA and ANZ at Qualcomm, said: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Singtel Singapore on this groundbreaking AI gateway initiative, which represents a significant step forward in our shared vision of harnessing the power of on-device AI.”

“By leveraging Qualcomm Technologies’ AI capabilities, we aim to revolutionize connectivity and enhance user experiences. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Singtel Group to bring transformative AI solutions to market.”

Outlook and Further Innovations

Following the successful implementation of the technology in Singapore, Singtel plans to roll out its AI-powered gateway to other regions within its operating footprint. This implementation will create smarter networks optimized for energy-efficient bandwidth allocation, enabling services such as Wi-Fi 7, low-latency gaming, and next-generation 10Gbps broadband offerings.

This new rollout is part of Singtel's broader commitment to taking a leading role in the connectivity space. Last year, Singtel was the first fixed broadband provider to implement the Broadband Forum’s TR-369 standard for Wi-Fi management. The standard allows Singtel to seamlessly manage customer devices from various manufacturers, accelerating the deployment of cutting-edge technologies and improving interoperability between devices and the network for customers.

As demand for ultra-fast and reliable internet continues to grow, the adoption of next-generation, AI-enabled gateways will help transform traditional Wi-Fi systems into intelligent solutions that deliver significant value to end-users.
