xAI, the AI company founded by Elon Musk, has unveiled its latest development: Grok 3. The new AI model family comprises various versions, including a smaller "Mini" model and a larger main model, supplemented by so-called Reasoning models. xAI emphasizes the rapid development time and the superior performance of Grok 3 in various benchmarks compared to competing products.
The presentation of Grok 3 took place during a livestream on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The presentation highlighted the speed with which xAI develops its AI models. The company, founded only in 2023, has achieved comparable results in a shorter time than established companies that began AI development years ago. xAI explained that Grok 3 was trained with ten times the computing power of its predecessor, Grok 2. For the training, the company used a data center in Memphis with 200,000 GPUs.
Elon Musk described Grok 3 as a "truth-seeking AI" that sometimes delivers results that might contradict common political correctness notions. This statement underscores xAI's focus on the most unbiased knowledge acquisition possible through AI.
xAI presented benchmark results that depict Grok 3 as superior in various areas. For example, the model is said to perform better than GPT-4 in the mathematics benchmark AIME and also lead in a test with questions from physics, biology, and chemistry (GPQA). Furthermore, Grok 3, under the name "chocolate", already achieved good results in the Chatbot Arena during the testing phase. In this competition, different AI models compete against each other, and users can select the answer they consider best. Grok 3 is said to have been regularly preferred here.
The reasoning capabilities of Grok 3 were particularly highlighted. Reasoning models simulate thought processes by evaluating different solutions and selecting the optimal one. Unlike other models, however, a part of this thought process remains hidden in Grok 3 to prevent so-called "model distillation". This is a technique in which the knowledge of a large model is transferred to a smaller one. xAI justifies this approach with the protection of its own model.
In addition to the core functions, Grok 3 has other features, including "DeepSearch", a function for conducting comprehensive research and creating summaries. Elon Musk also announced a "Voice Mode". Grok 2 is to be released as an open-source version in the coming months.
The release of Grok 3 underscores the growing importance of AI models in the field of knowledge acquisition and processing. xAI positions itself as a competitive player in this dynamic market with Grok 3. The coming months will show how Grok 3 proves itself in practice and what influence the model will have on the further development of the AI landscape.
