Three groundbreaking projects in Jersey, aiming to improve the lives of older adults using cutting-edge technologies, have been awarded funding. The initiatives were selected as part of the CareTech Challenge, a program supported by up to £2 million in government funding to promote innovative solutions for long-term, high-quality care.
The CareTech Challenge is run by Digital Jersey, an organization investing up to £20 million over three years in projects that utilize technological approaches to address the island's most pressing issues. The Minister for Sustainable Development, Kirsten Morel, emphasized the importance of these projects for the island's long-term health strategy. With a projected 30% increase in the over-65 population within the next 15 years, these initiatives represent a significant contribution to addressing the associated challenges.
One of the funded innovations is Orchid Connect, a hybrid care service utilizing various technologies, including sensors that detect environmental changes. This allows older adults to live independently for longer, as family members or caregivers can react to potential problems early, before they escalate.
Another project receiving funding is the "Hero of Health Jersey" app, developed by the Jersey-based organization Lifestyle Medicine. The app connects users with local services, online resources, and personalized coaching. Thanks to the funding, the app can now be rolled out island-wide, starting with GP surgeries, Jersey General Hospital, and volunteer services.
The third funded project is Good Boost, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create personalized rehabilitation and prevention programs. The goal is to establish a network of rehabilitation centers in community hubs across Jersey.
Tony Moretta, CEO of Digital Jersey, highlighted that these projects bring together leading minds to implement technology-driven solutions that can improve islanders' lives. The initiatives demonstrate the potential of technology to address the challenges of an aging population and enhance the quality of life for older adults.
The investment in these projects underscores Jersey's commitment to promoting innovative healthcare solutions and utilizing technology as a tool for positive societal change. The combination of government funding and Digital Jersey's dedication creates a dynamic environment for the development and implementation of forward-thinking technologies in healthcare.
