The Influence of AI on Learning Processes: Is ChatGPT Changing How We Learn?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly permeating all areas of our lives, including the education sector. Tools like ChatGPT, based on advanced language models, offer students, professionals, and lifelong learners new opportunities to research information, write texts, and understand complex issues. But what impact does the use of such AI systems have on our learning processes? Are they fundamentally changing the way we learn?
The availability of AI-powered writing tools like ChatGPT raises questions about the development of independent skills. Can learners develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and creative writing if they rely on AI to generate texts? Studies are already investigating the effects of AI on the learning process. Indonesian researchers, for example, have analyzed the changes in learning behavior of students who regularly use AI tools. Initial results suggest that the use of AI leads to a change in research habits and the approach to writing assignments.
The easy accessibility of information through AI tools can lead to learners spending less time on their own research and critical engagement with various sources. Instead, there is a risk that they will unquestioningly rely on the information provided by the AI. This could impair the development of information literacy and the ability to critically evaluate information.
Furthermore, there is the possibility that the use of AI tools reduces learners' motivation to formulate their own texts and improve their writing style. The temptation to rely on AI-generated texts could hinder the development of writing skills and the ability to express complex thoughts.
However, AI tools also offer opportunities for the learning process. They can support learners in quickly gaining an overview of a topic, getting to know different perspectives, and structuring their own ideas. AI can also act as a tutor by providing individual feedback on writing assignments and supporting learners in improving their writing skills.
The integration of AI into education requires a critical examination of the potentials and risks of this technology. It is important to develop strategies that leverage the benefits of AI without neglecting the development of important skills such as critical thinking, analytical skills, and writing competence. The challenge is to use AI as a supplementary tool in the learning process that empowers learners to think and learn independently and critically.
