The Chinese antitrust authority, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), has launched an investigation against the US chipmaker Nvidia. The focus is on the acquisition of the Israeli network specialist Mellanox Technologies Ltd. in 2020. The SAMR is examining whether Nvidia has violated conditions agreed upon during the approval of the acquisition. Details of the specific allegations have not yet been released.
Nvidia acquired Mellanox, a leading provider of high-performance networking solutions for data centers, for approximately $6.9 billion. The acquisition allowed Nvidia to expand its offerings of hardware for data centers and AI applications, particularly in the area of networking graphics processing units (GPUs) and AI accelerators. The Chinese authorities approved the transaction at the time, subject to conditions. According to media reports, these included a ban on product bundling between Nvidia and Mellanox, as well as the obligation not to disadvantage customers who only want to purchase products from one of the two companies.
The SAMR investigation comes at a time of heightened tensions in the trade conflict between the US and China. The US has imposed export restrictions on advanced technologies, including semiconductors, to China in recent years. These measures aim to restrict China's access to key technologies. Nvidia has also been subject to trade restrictions for some time regarding the export of certain chips to China. It is speculated that the SAMR investigation could be a response to these export restrictions.
Neither Nvidia nor the SAMR have commented in detail on the allegations so far. The investigation could have a significant impact on Nvidia's business in China, an important market for the chipmaker. The outcome of the investigation is currently open. If the SAMR finds violations of the conditions, sanctions could be imposed against Nvidia.
