AI-Powered Sorting Arrives in Apple Mail for Mac and iPad

Apple's Mail App Receives AI-Powered Sorting on Mac and iPad

Users of Apple's Mac and iPad devices have reason to celebrate: The long-awaited update of the Mail app with AI-powered sorting is nearing release. After the feature was already introduced on the iPhone with iOS 18.2 in December 2024, it is now set to arrive on other Apple platforms.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the update is expected to be released in April along with macOS 15.4 and iPadOS 18.4. The new features were already presented at WWDC 2024 and have been in use on the iPhone since then.

AI Sorting for More Clarity

The central innovation of the updated Mail app is the automatic sorting of incoming emails. The app uses four categories for this: "Important" for personal messages and time-sensitive content, "Transactions" for order confirmations and invoices, "News" for newsletters, and "Advertising" for promotional emails. The AI functions are executed directly on the device and are independent of Apple's cloud service Apple Intelligence (AI).

Not a New Concept, but with a Privacy Advantage

Automatic sorting of emails is not an entirely new concept. Similar functions have existed for years with other providers such as Google Mail and Microsoft Outlook. Apple's approach, however, differs through the local processing of the data on the device, which improves data privacy.

Challenges and Criticisms

The implementation of AI sorting in Apple's Mail app has not been without criticism. According to user reports, the sorting does not always work flawlessly. Furthermore, the feature is currently only available in English, although it is also advertised in Apple's German-language documentation. It remains to be seen whether these issues will be resolved with the upcoming update.

Optional Use of the AI Functions

Apple offers users the option to deactivate the automatic sorting and return to the classic list view. Thus, those who do not want to use the AI functions can continue to use the familiar display of their emails.

Outlook

The upcoming update of the Mail app promises more clarity and efficiency in handling emails on Mac and iPad. Whether the AI-powered sorting will meet user expectations and the existing problems will be resolved will be seen after the release.
